Where We Burn

Why, at Four Quarters. And what is Four Quarters you ask? We think it is absolutely the coolest, most progressive non-profit camp on the East Coast. Founded in 1995 as an InterFaith Sanctuary of Earth Religion, Four Quarters is a bizarre Church for bizarre people living in a bizarre world. Four Quarters has 400+ dues paying Members of the Camp who actually participate, volunteer and have built the place into what it is. They have been hosting Magic Fire Circles, Fire Festivals, participatory ritual, and outdoor drum festivals for over a decade; and are the host for Gaian Mind. The finest Psy-Trance festival in America. Yeh, way cool.

As a non-profit, Four Quarters owns the camp and The Land. That gives Wicker Man some unique advantages. We know we have a home; and it's a home that can expand. We have some incredible equipment and infrastructure to use, just like Burning Man; which allows us to think both big and long-term. Backhoes, tractors, trucks and trailers, a complete woodworking and metal working shop. Areas for storage of Art from year to year, real roads for Art Cars. Raw materials from the Land.

The Camp
Four Quarters became a camp because of it's location; surrounded on three sides by Sidling Creek, one of the cleanest free flowing streams in PA. See the maps for more. It has 180 acres of deep woods, open meadows and high rock cliffs; and five swimming holes! In fact the biggest swimming hole is where we are locating "Sin City," one of our three theme towns. Guess why!

Down along the river is the finest camping, with the stream backing to steep cliffs and creating a natural amphitheater under tall Tulip Poplar trees. The acoustics are great, which is why it is used as one of the sound stages at Gaian Mind. We will be using it that way too, as "Sound Town."

Up on the hill is where we will probably be burning The Wicker Man. Open and sunny with scattered trees. And it's where Four Quarters is building their Stone Circle. Big tall stones standing on their tippy-toes, it just has to be seen. Wicker Man is using the Stone Circle as "Center Circle." Relatively quiet and natural. The home for our values of sustainability and living in balance.

The camp itself has a full central sewage system, one that the Four Quarters staff built themselves. Currently it supports two hot shower houses with flush toilets. Last year they installed a camp wide piped water system with spigots hidden away throughout the woods. Power is generated on site, sometimes with Bio-Diesel, and is distributed with buried cables. There is a kitchen building and a covered stage. No cabins but lots of tent space. See the Ethics and Policies Section for more on how Wicker Man relates to the camp.

Got questions. The office at Four Quarters is always staffed, give them a call at 814-784-3080.

Location
We are located in the Allegheny foothills just across the PA line from Maryland's Interstate 68. Exit 68 in fact, easy to remember.
That puts us 100 miles from the Washington DC and Baltimore Beltways. Without traffic we make the trip in 1:45; with traffic you could be all day, but that's one of the joys of city life. We make Pittsburgh in just over two hours, Philly in three. See the Direc-shines section for full info and downloadable travelling maps.

   AND!!!
Try our car pool ridesharing database. We put a lot of effort into it, and it will match up rides and riders.
    Use it. Please.
